Winter weather

Most are probably already aware of this, but I noticed some have dropped some thing from their forecasts, but still highlighting the possibility of at least some ice, (had some snow, but removed it) as the precip moves into the area in the early morning hours if it moves in that early before it becomes all rain.

Part of the NWS discussion this afternoon mentions it....

EXPECT SOME RISE IN TEMPS LATE TONIGHT...ESPECIALLY OVER HIGHER TERRAIN...BUT SOME SHELTERED VALLEYS MAY BE BELOW FREEZING AT ONSET OF PRECIP IN THE NORTHEAST AND NORTHERN HALF OF MOUNTAINS ZONES. WILL INCLUDE POSSIBILITY OF PATCHY LIGHT SLEET AND/OR FREEZING RAIN FOR BRIEF PERIOD THESE AREAS...BUT EXPECT TEMPS TO WARM ABOVE FREEZING AND PRECIP TO BE ALL RAIN BEFORE SIGNIFICANT PRECIP ARRIVES.

...A PERIOD OF WINTERY WEATHER POSSIBLE AROUND DAWN MONDAY...

A DEVELOPING WEATHER SYSTEM WILL MOVE INTO EAST KENTUCKY LATE TONIGHT SPREADING A LARGE AREA OF MOSTLY RAIN THROUGHOUT THE REGION. HOWEVER...A PERIOD OF CLEAR SKIES AHEAD OF THIS SYSTEM...TONIGHT WILL ALLOW THE VALLEYS IN THE EAST TO RADIATE WELL...DROPPING THEIR TEMPERATURES INTO THE UPPER 20S AND LOWER 30S. COMBINED WITH THE INCOMING RAIN... THESE COLD TEMPERATURES COULD RESULT IN A BRIEF PERIOD OF SNOW... SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN TOWARD DAWN...MAINLY IN THE VALLEYS. WHILE LITTLE OR NO ACCUMULATION OF ICE OR SNOW IS EXPECTED FROM THIS... THERE COULD BE SOME SLICK SPOTS ON AREA ROADS DURING MONDAY MORNING RUSH HOUR.

Again, mainly if it moves in early enough and probably will just be brief, and mainly a concern in the sheltered valleys if any at all before it changes over to all rain even in those areas. Wise is at 36 but its 29 at the Tri-cities airport right now, so you can see what they're talking about. Hopefully the models aren't underestimating anything like they did last season with a similar scenario.

Rain could change back over to some wrap around-upslope snow showers Tuesday.

Another system moving in late in the week, Friday and Saturday, could bring some rain/snow, a lot of uncertainty with this one still yet. But the big deal with it right now is the cold air dropping down behind it. A REALLY cold airmass may be dropping down into the area for the first weeks of December. Some think its going to be the type we haven't seen in quite some time.

Statement as of 2:35 PM EST on November 24, 2008

... Light snow accumulations possible late tonight and Tuesday across southwest Virginia... the mountains of northeast Tennessee... and the Smoky Mountains...

Cold air will move into the area tonight behind a cold front.
Meanwhile a trough in the upper levels of the atmosphere will move over the area late tonight into Tuesday. This will bring snow showers and flurries to portions of southwest Virginia... northeast Tennessee... and the smokies.

At this time... it appears that total snowfall accumulations of up to 2 inches will be possible over the normally favored higher elevation areas of southwest Virginia and the mountains of east Tennessee. Lower elevations in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia may pick up a dusting up to a half inch of snow.
